Sail Reflections

"Sail Reflections"
Oil, 6" x 6" on canvas panel.
$150 unframed.

I met my first Internet "scammer" today. I knew it was a scam from the very beginning. Call it female intuition, who knows, but I knew the potential purchase wasn't legit. Sure enough, within time the "client" (who wanted to pay by company check) actually wanted two of the same painting. Yeah ... that makes a lot of sense. I told my husband last night ... "Just wait, soon he will tell me that he wants to pay me more money than he owes me and he will want me to wire him the overpayment". Sure enough, that was in the email I received today. I wish that there was a way to bust these scammers. Does anybody know if there is a way to turn these scammers in? It kills me to think that an artist out there might get scammed by one of these idiots.

Thanks for posting that! How annoying, and yes, frightening that someone might not catch it as you did.

Karen,
It is interesting to find out that many of the other Daily Painters artists also received an email from him (Owen Smith is his name). Many of them were suspicious but I really hope no one falls for his con.

Don't know if it's the same person but apparently he's using a lot of different names.
Check out this thread as well

Love this painting. I'm surprised at how small a palette you use to such good effect. I try using a fairly restricted palette but not as small as yours.

Erik - It is so sad to read that so many artists are getting contacted by these scammers. I feel fortunate that I knew from the beginning that this was not for real. Maybe I am suspicious, who knows, I just "had the feeling" that it wasn't for real. I feel horrible for the artists that thinks he has a big sale and then ends up not only losing the sale but some of their own monies as well.

Gorgeous painting, Lesley. You know I love ALL of your work. Wish I had your dilemma with commissions!

Speaking of commissions, the scam info is terrifying. I know there is a way to track back to the computer used but I don't think there is anything one can do about it unless actual fraud involving money occurs. Thanks so much for the heads up!
