I am posting this painting because it is one of my favorites and the title is a PERFECT description of my day today! Thanks to all my girlfriends for a wonderful lunch, thanks to my husband and son for a wonderful dinner, thanks to my friends and family for all of the wonderful wishes and gifts and thanks to all of you for the many, many birthday wishes on my blog and facebook! And of course, thanks to the LAKERS for beating the Celtics! A great day all around!
And now ... the big news ... I did the drawing and from all of the comments from the past seven days (119 total) the lucky winner of the painting is Carol DeMumbrum!!!!!!!

I decided that today I would use the same reference photo that I used for my demo last Saturday. I wanted to try a smaller one in my usual "daily" 6" x 6" size. I brightened up the water a bit and also opted for the yellow highlight on the boat on the left. The photograph of the painting could be better but I am in a rush. I need to leave for the airport to pick up my oldest son. He is home for three days for a swim meet ... and then back to Stanford for dead week and finals. The calm before the storm ... perhaps?

Today was a frustrating day in my studio. Paint and scrape. Paint and scrape some more. Then walk away for awhile. Come back and look at the canvas with hopes the painting fairies have come and fixed the mess on the canvas. No such luck!
As artists, we have these "frustrating days" and they are not fun. However, I am sure they are an important part of the development of every artist. Perhaps, it is the belief that "without the lows, we have no highs"? Or just that "we learn from our mistakes"? Or maybe it is "we need to scrape off our canvas so we always have a nice pile of gray paint on our palette". Hmmm. Just not sure about his. Your thoughts? (The painting posted here is NOT from today ...)

Most of you know I am a huge Laker fan. Since the playoffs are here, I am offering a discount on my paintings that will be determined by the score differential in the Laker games. For example, the Lakers won last night by 3 points, so my paintings are all 3% off. Now, had I been a Boston Celtics fan I would be in big trouble because they beat the Miami Heat last night by 33 points! And if the Lakers lose, you pay me. Kidding! (There is no discount or increase if they lose!) So, check your sports section. Because if the Lakers win big, so do all of you!

Painting makes me happy. I love bright colors, reflections in the water and those three reasons are why I painted this painting. After a long week in the office, what better way to enjoy a Sunday afternoon than sailing in the bay? All it takes are a few hours and you will enjoy the beautiful seascape and silent peace while sailing on the water. Eventually it is time to head home ... back to reality and another week. But it is days like these that help us appreciate "free time".

OK, so I m back. I feel as if my little "Olympics" paintings were a nice change of pace and it forced me to paint scenes that I never would normally paint! It did require me to get out of my comfort zone and there were many great things that came from it. I found myself reading a lot more about the Vancouver Olympics and the heartfelt stories about the Canadian people and their incredible generosity. I love Canada!

So, back to boats for a while. I am working on a few commissions and my big April show so I will probably post a lot of these small fun ones. The reflections in the water make me smile so I will probably continue to paint them for a very long time.

Speaking of things that make me smile, one of the advantages of having a blog has been the wonderful people I have met. It seems odd to call someone you have never met a "dear friend" but I must say there's one woman out there in "blogspace" that I want to make sure you know about. Dreama Tolle Perry has become not only one of my favorite artists, but she is also one of my favorite people. It is funny how I can just pick up the phone and call her at any time and we can talk forever. We are having fun trying to figure out how artists should take advantage of the incredible opportunities via the internet and she has been a wonderful mentor and teacher. She has way more art experience than I do yet she is so willing to discuss my crazy marketing ideas (at any hour). If you haven't had a chance to check out her art, please do!

I really like the bright blue paint that I mixed up for yesterday's painting so I decided to mix up some more! There's something about the dark contrast that really brings out the reds in the boat's reflections.

I am painting larger paintings next week so it is fun to try the different color combinations. We are so lucky as artists ... that we have the liberty to paint whatever we want!

"Artists Helping Artists" - I just signed up for a free conference call service that allows 240 callers to participate on a conference call (for free). My intent is to host bi-monthly "Artist Helping Artists" conference calls. Anybody can call in, the purpose of the call is to share ideas and for artists all over the country to participate! I will post the date, call in time, etc. tomorrow on my blog, but let me know your thoughts. I have some ideas for topics but please post suggestions here! Thanks!

As promised, I decided it was time to paint boats again. It has been way too long and am so glad I went back to my favorite subject matter because I really like this one. I like the format (tall and skinny) and also the colors. Maybe I will paint boats again tomorrow ...

I do have quite a few entries for competitions to paint. Most are landscapes, i.e. city scenes. I will be doing a few Stanford and Palo Alto paintings in the next week so stay posted!

I am sooo sorry that I haven't posted a new painting in a while. But I have been so busy getting organized with my goals and starting off the new year that I haven't had much time to paint. I know it is a lame excuse but I am in that "nesting stage" where I want to be ready for the year before I dive back in to my studio.

I have been working a lot on my website, in fact I was at the Apple store this morning at 7:00am for a tutoring session. I added a page to my website that now offers all of my notecards. I have been sending them out with all of my sold paintings and finally built up an inventory so they are for sale here on my website. I sold 20 today!

I am just about done with my January newsletter and I finished my new filing system that will enable me to FINALLY keep tack of exhibition jury deadlines! I hope I am not getting carried away because it looks like I am going to enter six competitions this month. I might need to change my goal for the year ... since it was only ten!

I also made the leap and decided to offer my paintings on Imagekind. I think it is a nice way to expand my art into the corporate world as framed prints of my artwork are a good alternative for businesses and offices. I just about have that completed so click here for more information.

I am also starting an art class tonight with Jennifer McChristian. She is an amazing painter and I am really hoping to learn a lot from her. I absolutely love her paintings!

I will be back in the studio in the next few days, I promise!

One of my favorite cities in the world is San Francisco. I lived in the Bay Area for about five years after I graduated from college. In fact, I met my wonderful husband while I was living in Palo Alto. Last year I took a weekend trip to San Francisco with my girlfriends and we played "tourist" for the weekend. It was so fun to see the city again and all of it's beauty! Now that I have a son in college in Palo Alto I need to try to make lots of trip to Northern California.

I have been busy getting ready for the holidays and finishing commissions. This is my favorite time of the year and our oldest son comes home from college this evening. I am so thrilled! So here's to five long days of family, great food, football and painting!

I have been out of town for almost two weeks ... I spent over a week in Hawaii for business and three days up in northern California visiting our freshman son in college. I am exhausted but so happy to be home again!
Now it is time to get back to my studio. Sorry that I have been posting so little but I find it hard to paint when I am on the road! New paintings tomorrow, I promise!

I have been in Atlanta for the 4th of July weekend cheering my younger son at the Volleyball National Junior Olympics. So sorry I haven't posted in a few days. I did get a chance to paint ... between matches ... and I am still busy getting ready for my show this weekend!
